Joining with a friend or partner - is it worth it?

Leading a large group with arms raised
In a pair it is easier to turn up. Also easier to stop.

Among our most persistent students are couples and friends who joined together. Among those who quit fastest are also couples and friends who joined together.

The difference is not in the people. It is in a few things worth knowing in advance.

Why joining in a pair works

  • A slot two people hold is harder to cancel. The strongest single predictor of whether you will still be training in a year.
  • Transport and logistics. It sounds trivial and it is not. Who picks up whom is frequently the difference between turning up and not.
  • A shared vocabulary. When both of you know what “drop the shoulders” means, the practice continues outside the hour.
  • The first month is less awkward. For many people, walking into a new group is a bigger obstacle than the training itself.
  • A partner for drills. When partner work arrives, you have someone you trust.

Why it sometimes does not work

Comparison. By far the most common reason. If one of you progresses faster, the other reads it as personal failure - which they would not do if they had come alone.

Dependence on the other. When one stops, the chance that the other stops is extremely high. A slot that was shared suddenly has no owner.

Different goals. One wants technique, the other wants relief. That is not a problem in itself, but it becomes one if you both expect the same session.

Training turns into conversation. Two people in a group who know each other well often end up talking instead of training. Both notice and neither says anything.

It does not matter how slowly you go, so long as you do not stop.

Three agreements that make the difference

1. If one cannot come, the other goes anyway. The only agreement that genuinely matters. Without it the shared slot becomes the weakest link.

2. You do not compare. Different bodies, different starting points, different speeds. Say it out loud in the first week and you avoid half the problems.

3. You do not comment on each other in the hall. Corrections come from the teacher. A partner’s remark about your stance is almost always a worse idea than it seems.

Should you be in the same group?

Usually yes - the shared slot is the whole advantage of joining together.

Unless the experience gap is large. If one has trained three years and the other is starting, the beginner is better off in the beginners’ group. The shared slot can be the other day of the week.

Unless one wants Qi Gong and the other Kung Fu. In the afternoon that solves itself: the same two days, an hour apart.

Private hours for two

If the group slots do not suit you, we run private hours for two as well. The content adapts to both of you; the load adapts to each of you separately.

Couples with incompatible schedules and friends with very different fitness levels use this often.

Practicalities

Joining as a pair needs nothing special - sign up for a first class together - a single visit each is enough to start.
