What to wear to your first class, and what you actually need

The most important equipment for a first class is a comfortable pair of trousers.

The most common question we get by email is not about technique or price. It is: what should I wear? For many people this is the last obstacle before a first visit - the fear of turning up wrongly equipped and having everyone notice.

So here is the short, honest answer. None of it needs buying in advance.

What to wear

  • Comfortable long trousers. Tracksuit bottoms, sports trousers, anything that survives a deep squat and a high step. This is the only genuinely important item - a low stance is not possible in tight jeans.
  • A short-sleeved t-shirt. Not oversized. Not because your appearance matters, but so the teacher can see what your spine and shoulders are doing.
  • Nothing else. No uniform, no belt, no special footwear. Not later either - we have no compulsory uniform.

In class you will see a mix of t-shirts and tracksuits. We require no uniform.

What to bring

A bottle of water and a small towel if you sweat easily. Socks if the changing room feels cold. That is all.

Class starts barefoot. We train barefoot because the foot then feels the floor, and because balance is built by the foot rather than handed over to a shoe. If that is a problem - a fresh injury, a fungal infection, anything - say so beforehand and train in thin indoor trainers. Nobody will make a subject of it.

A first class does not test your equipment. It only tests whether you came.

Jewellery, watch, phone

Leave rings, bracelets and necklaces in the changing room or at home. In partner work they are the only objects that can actually injure someone. Everyone removes their watch, teachers included. The phone stays in your bag - class is the one part of the day you do not need it.

What matters is that the teacher can see you - so wear clothes that do not hide your posture.

Nails and hair

Short fingernails are a rule in any serious school - a scratch during partner work is the most common minor injury and the most easily avoided. Tie long hair so it does not interfere with movement, and take out hard clips.

When to eat

Last substantial meal about two hours before class. The warm-up involves rotations and folds that a full stomach does not enjoy. A light snack half an hour before is fine.

And later on

Once you train regularly you may want proper training clothes - wide cotton trousers and a school t-shirt. Plenty of people never buy them and are still in a tracksuit years later. In Kung Fu, kit is a consequence, not an entry ticket. If someone sells you the reverse, you are in the wrong hall.

Classes run at Ziherlova 44 in Ljubljana, mornings and afternoons. Come in what you already own.
