How to come back after three months away

A misty autumn path through a forest
You come back to where you stopped - not to the beginning.

Almost anyone who trains for long has at least one extended break behind them. An injury, a move, a new job, a child, exam season, three weeks of holiday that stretched into three months.

What decides things is not the break. It is how you picture the return - and most people picture it wrong.

Why people do not come back

Rarely because they lost interest. Almost always because of three false assumptions.

“I will have to start over.” You will not, and you cannot. More on that below.

“Everyone will notice I was gone.” They will notice, and they will say hello. That is all.

“I should get a bit fitter first.” The most cunning excuse of the three, because it sounds responsible. In practice it means waiting for a moment that never arrives - the training is what makes you fit, not a condition for it.

Nobody in the line is counting how long you were away.

What the body keeps and what it loses

After three months away, something fairly specific happens.

  • Fitness goes fast. Aerobic capacity drops noticeably within three to four weeks. It is what you feel most on returning - and also what comes back quickest.
  • You lose some strength, but less than you think. Muscle mass declines more slowly than performance.
  • Mobility shrinks. Mainly the hips and shoulders, which is to say exactly what was hardest to gain.
  • You do not lose the technique. This is the crucial part. Movement patterns that settled into the body stay for months and years. A form that used to run without thought will be clumsy for one hour and back the next.

So coming back is not starting over. It is a few weeks of letting fitness catch up with technique that is still there.

It does not matter how slowly you go, so long as you do not stop.

The first week back

  1. Come to one class, not three. The biggest mistake on returning is trying to make up for lost time. The body does not read that as enthusiasm but as a sudden jump in load - which is how injuries happen.
  2. Pick Qi Gong if the break was longer than two months. Low joint load, the same room, the same people. Add Kung Fu the following week.
  3. Say that you were away. Not as an apology, but so the teacher knows how to set the intensity.
  4. Expect muscle soreness. The first two sessions will be uncomfortable. The third will not.
  5. Do not compare yourself to your former self. Compare yourself to last week - which, when you have just come back, is a very generous measure.

For the first two weeks back, Qi Gong is the better choice.

The first month

The aim of the first month is not fitness. It is to rebuild the slot - two fixed evenings a week that are taken.

In practice that means it is better to turn up tired and work at half capacity than not to turn up. An hour in which you did less than you could is still an hour that keeps the habit. A skipped hour keeps nothing.

Somewhere in week three or four the thing that makes returning worthwhile happens: the body remembers. A movement you were chasing on the first evening suddenly runs by itself.

If the break was caused by an injury

Then coming back is a matter of a plan rather than motivation.

Bring your physiotherapist’s or doctor’s instructions and tell us what is allowed and what is not. Classes are group classes, corrections are individual - we can raise a stance, shorten a movement, drop the finish. What we cannot do is guess.

For most recoveries from injury, Qi Gong is a better first stop than Kung Fu: the same rhythm and the same breath work, without impact.

Why it is often easier the second time

Because you know how you feel after training and are no longer trying to work out whether you like it. The first time a person decides; the second time they simply return.

We have no statistics on this, but we do have a decade of watching: those who come back after a break tend to stay considerably longer than those who never left.

Practicalities

There is no need to wait for the start of a month. Sign up for any class at Ziherlova 44 in Ljubljana - the 6:00 morning slot or the afternoon at 17:30 or 18:30 - and start from there. If you are not sure yet, take a single visit or a ten-visit card.
