A morning Qi Gong session to open the festival day

Whoever turns up at eight is there for a reason.

Most festival programmes begin at noon. The first hour belongs to opening the stalls and to the people who never went to bed.

A morning session at eight therefore looks like a poor investment - low turnout, a lot of work, little visible effect. In practice the opposite is true, and this piece explains why.

Who turns up at eight

Fewer people. That is true and we do not hide it - out of three hundred visitors, a morning session typically draws between fifteen and fifty.

But those people are there for a reason. Nobody wanders past by accident at eight in the morning. That makes it the most attentive group of the entire festival - and the only one that will come back next year for the programme rather than the music.

The composition of that group also differs from the average: more older visitors, more families, more people who came with a partner or children and are looking for something they can do together.

What it does to the day

It gives the programme a beginning. A festival without a morning item does not start - it just slowly comes to life. One fixed point at eight means the day has a shape.

It changes the tone of the space. A field that was a dance floor at two in the morning takes on a different role at eight. That switch is surprisingly powerful for visitors.

It gives people an alternative. Every festival has visitors the programme does not speak to all the time. A morning session gives them a reason to stay another day.

It balances the schedule. If the evening programme is intense, a morning movement slot is what makes a multi-day visit sustainable.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

What it looks like

Forty-five to sixty minutes, adapted to bodies that slept in a tent.

A very slow start (15 minutes). Nothing that requires flexibility. The joints open gradually, because after a night on the ground they are stiff.

The sequence (25 minutes). The same as in a regular workshop, with more repetition and less explanation.

A quiet close (10 minutes). Standing or seated, as people prefer.

Open entry and exit. People join and leave as they go. It is a festival morning; a closed group is not a realistic expectation.

Practical details

Time: 8:00 works best. At 7:00 there are too few people; by 9:30 the slot collides with breakfast and the opening of the site.

Space: a meadow or a tent. Grass is wet in the morning, so a tent or a dry surface is an advantage.

PA: usually unnecessary in the morning, because groups are smaller and the site is quiet.

Every day of the festival. This is the most important point. A morning session repeated daily works far better than a one-off - people come back a second time, and it is on the second day that something begins to happen.

What it is not

It is not a wake-up call and it is not entertainment. We do not expect to rouse the campsite and we use neither music nor loud instruction.

Nor is it meant to draw a crowd. If an organiser is disappointed by twenty participants, our motives do not match - a morning session measures the quality of contact, not the turnout.

How to arrange it

Send us the festival dates, the location and whether you want the session daily or once. We will propose a programme and a price.

We are based in Ljubljana and run workshops across Slovenia.
